Permaculture

What is Permaculture?

Permaculture (as a broad definition) is a combination of philosophy and agriculture. It is a system for growing food, creating resilient, pesticide-free and abundant gardens that maximize yield and efficiency via intentional design, companion planting, composting and other "whole-systems" solutions. In many ways, Permaculture is as much a lifestyle as it is a gardening technique. Rain-water catchment, backyard animals, vegetable gardens, orchards, pollinator gardens, etc all aimed to create a balanced system.

Landscape Solutions

Why are landscape/natural solutions better than engineered solutions?

Natural solutions (such as planting a slope for stability rather than building a retaining wall) typically get stronger over time as the roots grow and they provide additional benefits as well such as CO2 absorbtion, soil decontamination, wildlife habitat, etc whereas a block wall actually gets weaker over time and requires periodic maintenance to maintain structural integrity. That being said… not every situation lends itself for a natural solution, sometimes engineering is the only way to go. That's part of the reason I am, as both a permaculturist and an engineer, uniquely suited to consult on a wide-range of landscape-centered projects.
